The background
The Feldberger Hof opened its gates for the first time on 24 June 1864. The poor road conditions meant that the first few years were characterised by frequent changes in ownership. The takeover by Carl Mayer in 1879 heralded the start of a new era. From 1881, Mayer ran the hotel together with his sister Franziska, who became known as the “Feldberg Mother”.
Tourism boom
Within a short period of time, the completion of the new Feldberg Road (1885) and the development of skiing as a trend sport led to a boom in tourism at the Feldberg. Between 1885 and 1910, four additional annexes were built, which increased the Feldberger Hof’s capacity to over 300 beds. A dining room with over 500 seats was also built together with the “Hebelstube”, which is still part of the hotel today. There was also a change in management during this period, as Carl Mayer transferred the hotel business to his son Oscar and the hotelier Albert Schladerer.
1920s & 1930s
Skiing became increasingly popular in the 1920s. Skiing lessons were offered at the Feldberger Hof from 1920 to 1930 and one of the instructors was Albert Thoma, the father of the Olympic champion Georg Thoma. Fanny Mayer – the “Feldberg Mother” – died in 1934 at the age of 83.
Lots of developments
The Feldberger Hof underwent many developments from the mid-1930s onwards. The new owners redesigned the Feldberger Hof using the reinforced concrete skeleton technique. Veronika Wiedemann, the granddaughter of Carl Mayer, ran the hotel after the 2nd World War and until it was sold to the Reich brothers in 1971.
The Reich brothers
After being acquired by the Reich brothers, the Feldberger Hof was converted into a sport hotel. A new underground car park, shops with a snack bar, skittle alleys, a pub, a ski rental shop and a supermarket were built in several stages during the period from 1973 to 1978. The last project undertaken by the Reich brothers was the construction of the swimming paradise with a sauna, solariums and a large indoor pool.
Banhardt family
Denise and Thomas Banhardt acquired the Feldberger Hof from Emil Reich in October 1993 and have since worked on continually improving the offerings and level of comfort in the Feldberger Hof. They created the “Bergdörfli”, the children’s paradise and the "conservatory". A new hotel wing with apartments, an indoor squash, football and badminton court, a fitness centre, mini golf course, fun park with climbing wall and a giant slide in the pool area were built. A wellness island was built in 2003, Happy’s “Kinderwelt" opened in 2009 and this was followed by “Fanny’s”, a new restaurant, in 2010. The swimming paradise was completely renovated in 2011 and the Kelo sauna and "children’s “Splash World" were built.
The Feldberg Residence with 10 family apartments (up to 100 m² per apartment) was opened in 2005. 6 further family apartments were added at a later date. A major anniversary was celebrated in 2014: 150 years of the Feldberger Hof.
Ski anniversary & Fundorena
The “125 years of skiing” anniversary was celebrated in 2016.
Background: On 8 February 1891, the French diplomat and adventurer Dr. Robert Pilet conquered the summit of the Feldberg on curved wooden boards and with a cane in his hand. This heralded the birth of skiing in Central Europe. The Todtnau ski club, the first ski club in Germany, was also founded in 1891. The Feldberg became the heart of skiing in Central Europe. In 1900, the first German skiing championships took place on the Feldberg and the world’s first ski lift was built in 1908.
A major dream of Thomas Banhardt also came true: the "Fundorena" 4,000 m² indoor sports hall was built and is still a highlight today.
